Schneider P64x Advanced Transformer Protection Relays
Transformers are costly assets in electrical power systems. The removal of all electrical and mechanical stress, which is also desirable for extending transformer life, is impractical. In such cases, techniques adapted for measurement and warning (or tripping) and the recommendation of total service work can help to plan preventive maintenance – before a costly failure occurs.
Internal faults, where short circuits dissipate the highest local energy, are a risk for all transformers. However, if cleared quickly, the possibility of rewinding the windings is reduced and fundamental damage may be irreparable. MiCOM P642, P643 and P645 Advanced Transformer Protection and Control
MiCOM P642, P643 and P645 take all these issues into account, preserving the lifespan and providing rapid protection for transformer faults. Hosted on the advanced IED platform, P64x includes differential, REF, thermal and overflux protection, as well as backup protection against unremoved external faults. The different models cover two and three-winding transformers (including autotransformers) with up to 5 sets of three-phase CT inputs.
Large CT numbers are common in ring busbar/mesh corner applications where the P64x sums the currents to create the total winding current, facilitating the application of backup protection. Backup overcurrent can be routed when the user includes an optional 3-phase VT input in the model of their choice.
